The best and worst thing one can say about this book is that it is just a very large collection of ancient and modern recipes whose ingredients and preparation conform to at least conservative Jewish dietary laws. It is very similar to a collection of all English Language published sonnets ranging from Shakespeare to the little old lady in Nebraska who publishes in her local newspaper. Everything has been published and everything follows certain rules, but all connections between the collected items ends there.This is not an unworthy book. It sort of reminds me of the old Palgrave??????s Golden Treasury of English Poetry, which collected works according to little rhyme or reason, except that the authors were English and wrote in English.This book has three things going for it.First is its size. With 825 recipes, someone looking for a recipe to accomplish a particular objective within the kosher rules, they have a good chance of finding one.Second is the fact that all recipes! have been published, but not all have been published in the pages of the New York Times. Some come from recently published books such as Marcus Samuelson??????s ??????Aquavit??????. This means that each one has been editorially reviewed by one or more of professional editorial eyes.Third is the obvious love and care with which the editor(s) have assembled the material. The introductory essays by Mimi Sheraton and Joan Nathan are informative and endearing.Unfortunately, all sense of cohesiveness stops on the first page of Appetizer recipes. There is no trace of any scholarship which would help sort out the recipes by whether the originating tradition was, for example Ashkanazy or Sephardic.The Chapters dividing the recipes are:AppetizersSoupsFishPoultryMeatVegetablesGrains, Legumes, and PastaSaladsLight Fare for Brunch and LunchTrimmings, Savory and SweetBreads, Rolls, Bagels, and MatzohsDessertsThere is no sense in which Jewish traditional food forms a cuisine in the same ! sense that Morocco or Turkey or Iran have a distinctive cuisin! e. Jewis h food is an overlay on the existing cuisine of the region.This is a very worthy book if you have few cookbooks and are in need of a more diverse selection of kosher recipes. It is interesting that there is no statement in the book saying that the validity of the kosher nature of the recipes has not been certified by any rabbinical authority. And note that a kosher recipe can easily be made non-kosher by using non-kosher ingredients. A reasonable price for a lot of recipes. If you want a more measured look at Jewish Cooking, check out Claudia Roden's book on the subject and her book on Middle Eastern food.

A Saint in Seattle is a fascinating book that I did not want to lay aside.The early chapters are devoted to Dhezhung Rinpoche's childhood and early adulthood, and are a wonderful depiction of what intensive spiritual training was like for a gifted lama in early twentieth century Tibet.The brief biographies of his primary teachers are also great to read--both informative and inspiring. These buildings are also called Tilt-ups.In this method a flat concrete pad is poured that forms the foot print of a new building. The pad is allowed to cure and then the concrete walls are poured, lying down, on top of the pad. Once the walls are cured they are tilted from horizontal to vertical with a crane and secured.

Topping out is a ceremony done when the erection of the skin and roof of a building is completed. Its origins are obscure and is common in Germany and America. In America, when a sky scraper was completed the last girder to be hoisted was painted white and signed by all the workmen involved. A leafy tree branch and the US flag were tied to it. Toasts were drunk and sometimes the workmen were treated to a meal. In other buildings the ceremony focussed on the bedding of the last block of masonry or brick. The ceremony is akin to the practice of placing a newspaper, coins etc under the foundation stone of a building.It is similar to ship naming and launching ceremonies, is probably of similar antiquity, and was perhaps done to placate the Gods, and shield the building from harm.

Having been a huge fan of the first Splinter Cell, and an even bigger fan of the Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this game. I am already very familiar with the game play, but for some reason, Ubisoft decided to change the behaviours of the buttons. Many standard Xbox controls don't work as expected, and some of the changes are a bit awkward. But one of the biggest gripes is about the loading time. Understandably, Chaos Theory is stretchign the limit of the Xbox. Still, the loading time is unacceptable. Resuming a progress save for the first time after coming into the game has two consecutive loading screens. It just shouldn't happen. Also, the biggest change is that there are no longer any checkpoints. I think the genius of the first two games was that the game designers designated very well the part where you can save, which makes every move close to the next checkpoint all the more important. But now Chaos Theory allows save at any ti! me, and for a stealth game that can blow any minute, it creates a temptation to save after every little conquest. But the saving time and restart are time consuming. So the game no longer feels coherent. It's partly my fault, admittedly, but that's because the game was designed to allow this kind of game play. Also, the dialogues try too hard to be funny.

Prospect_theory


The prospect theory was developed by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in 1979. Starting from empirical evidence, it describes how individuals evaluate loss|losses and gains. In the original formulation the term prospect referred to a lottery.
The theory is basically divided into two stages, editing and evaluation. In the first, the different choices are ordered following some heuristic so as to let the evaluation phase be more simple. The evaluations around losses and gains are developed starting from a reference point. The value function which passes through this point is s-shaped and as its asymmetric implies, given the same variation in absolute value, a bigger impact of losses than of gains (loss aversion). Some behaviors observed in economics, like the disposition effect or the reversing of risk aversion/risk seeking in case of gains or losses (termed the ''reflection effect''), can be explained referring to the prospect theory.An important implication of prospect theory is that the way economic agents subjectively framing (economics)|frame an outcome or transaction in their mind affects the utility they expect or receive. This aspect of prospect theory, in particular, has been widely used in behavioural eco! nomics and mental accounting. Framing and prospect theory has been applied to a diverse range of situations which appear inconsistent with standard economic rationality; the equity premium puzzle, the status quo bias, various gambling and betting puzzles, intertemporal consumption and the endowment effect. Another possible implication of prospect theory for economics is that utility might be reference based, in contrast with additive utility functions underlying much of neo-classical economics. This hypothesis is consistent with psychological research into happiness which finds subjective measures of wellbeing are relatively stable over time, even in the face of large increases in wellbeing (Easterlin, 1974; Frank, 1997)

The greater celandine (''Chelidonium majus'') is a yellow-flowering poppy, native to Europe and the Mediterranean Sea|Mediterranean basin. It is also widespread in North America, having been brought there by settlers as a herbal remedy for skin problems such as warts as early as 1672. The whole plant is toxic, containing a range of alkaloids; it may also cause contact dermatitis, particulalry the sap.Greater celandine plants may reach 80 centimetre|cm high, with deeply divided, 30-cm long leaf|leaves. The flowers comprise four yellow petals, each about 1 cm long, and are produced from May to July. Wattle_and_daub


Daub and wattle are building materials used in constructing houses. A woven latticework of wooden stakes called ''wattles'' is daubed with a mixture of mud and clay, animal dung and straw to create a structure. It is normally whitewashed to increase its resistance to rain. Examples of buildings which use wattle and daub can still be found in many parts of the world. In Half-timbered construction|half-timbered buildings, the wattle and daub is contained between wooden beams. This usually gives the building a black and white appearance when the daub is whitewashed, or brown and white, if it is not.The wattle and daub technique was used already in the Neolithic. It was common for houses of the Linearbandkeramic and R?ssen cultures of Central Europe, but is found in Western Asia as well (?atalh?y?k, Shillourokambos).This process is similar in modern architecture to lath and plaster, a common building material for wall surfaces, in which a series of wooden strips were covered w! ith a semi-dry plaster and then hardened into a flat surface. (This building method has itself been overtaken by drywall.)
